What are expandable catalog ads?
Expandable catalog ads are an ad option designed to help you earn more from visitors who scroll down to the end of your posts. They resemble digital circular ads and can expand to take up a large portion of the page. They only run at the bottom of your posts in the Below Post 1 ad slot.
Expandable Catalog Ads are available in two formats:
- Standard: Starts fully expanded, showing all ad content immediately
- Compact/Delayed: Starts compact and expands once the ad has been in view for 3 seconds (includes a countdown timer)
Benefits of Expandable Catalog Ads
- Higher revenue: These ads offer higher earnings for views at the bottom of your posts.
- Full control: Easily choose if and when these ads appear using the controls in Ad Preferences.
How Expandable Catalog Ads Work

Eligible sites that are also enrolled in Auto-Optimize will be automatically enabled for this ad type. You can turn this off by using the controls in Ad Preferences.
Eligible sites that are not enrolled in Auto-Optimize can choose to turn these ads on with the controls in Ad Preferences.
FAQs
Where do these ads run on my site?
- This type of ad can run on any page on your site, but only in the ad unit below the main content of your post (the ‘Below Post” slot).
Why should I run these ads on my site?
- These ad types earn higher than standard display ads would earn in the same ad slot.
I’m already running large format ads. Are these different?
- The ad sizes are different. Large format ads are 728x410 px on desktop and 320x480 px on mobile. Expandable catalog ads are larger, so we wanted to make it easy to manage your preferences about this type of ad.
I don’t want these ads to run on my site. How do I remove them?
- You can disable these ads in the Ad Preferences section of your dashboard with the control for “Expandable catalog ads”.
- Enterprise publishers: reach out to your Account Manager.
Will all my site visitors see these ads every time they come to my site?
- No, the ad campaigns associated with these ads are “geo-targeted.” This means that ads will only be shown to visitors within certain physical locations (typically within close proximity to the advertiser’s physical location or area of service). These ads are also limited by frequency. A visitor can only be shown the same ad up to 3 times per day.
Will these ads impact INP, iOS refresh, or CLS?
- We did not see any significant negative impacts to INP, iOS refresh, or CLS during our testing of these ad types.
